The Spirit of Integrity

Eli has started a series of posts in his blog, Roy’s also posted from his angle, and I’ve been hinting to that in my last posts. Integrity – our management system at Typemock.

I’d like to add what I feel about Integrity. I see Integrity as the tool towards becoming a professional. It’s about taking responsibility and stepping up. But there’s one more thing here: It’s a great motivator. It takes a while to sink in, and you need someone to hold you accountable, until it does. But once you get into the spirit, it has a great effect on you.

When you commit in front of the team, it really pains you when you don’t complete your assignment. The commitment compels you to complete it, and find ways to do it. Since you don’t have excuses (which really don’t interest anyone else, mind you) you feel the need to mark them off the list. Although the system has a bailout mechanism – you notify your team as soon as you know you can’t complete the task on time – man, it hurts to do that.

After a while, it has another effect. You start noticing the people who aren’t in integrity. They promise something, and don’t live up to it. Which is irritating, because it’s that simple – why don’t people do what they say they will?

To quote the great poets, Depeche Mode: "People are people". But if you’d like to get started, find a pair (yes, it works the same here). You need someone to hold you accountable. You need the feedback.
